Massive fires broke out at Balukali Rohingya
The fire broke out at about 3 pm, Monday, 22 March 2021. It swiftly spread across the dilapidated shelters made of canvas and bamboo. The camp housed thousands of refugees who had escaped the massacre in Burma in August 2017.
No official statement from the camp authority or UNHCR or the Bangladesh government so far. Based on unconfirmed report from several refugees affected by the fire, the fire has so far totally razed 3 blocks with an estimated number of 1000 units of dilapidated shelters in it.
The fire is still raging. The firemen are unable to enter the site. There is no road for vehicles to gain access to the area of fire.
As at 7.30 pm Bangladesh time, 20 children, 5 men and 7 women were feared dead. Many children were reported missing. The casualties are expected to increase several times as time goes by.
Emergency relief in the form of food pack, clean water, sleeping mat, blankets, kitchen utensils, clothes is needed fast. An estimated of USD50,000 is urgently needed.
